Glass Sign Etching, Engraving and Sandblasting Techniques
There are several different methods and techniques for Etching, Engraving or Carving Glass Signs. Etching creams use a diluted form of the acid used for acid etching signs. The Etching cream method is typically used by home crafts people, but is also used in some commercial glass sign making. The pure form of the glass etching acid is typically only used in commercial glass sign etching. Sandblasting is probably the most common technique of etching, engraving or carving glass signs. Laser etching can be used to make shallow etchings or engravings on glass signs, but for deeper etching or engraving sandblasting is typically used in commercial glass sign making. Another very common method of engraving glass signs is to use small drills or abrasive wheels made of copper. Stipple and drypoint methods of engraving glass signs use diamond tipped burrs to carve the glass. Many of these glass sign making methods and techniques will create a “frosted” glass sign, but the most popular technique used to create frosted glass signs is sandblasting.
